Jasper is an opaque variety of chalcedony occurring in color variations from red, green, yellow to brown. The name jasper comes from the Greek iaspis = variegated. The largest deposits are in Africa, Russia, India and Brazil. Jasper was also used to line the chapel of St. Wenceslas in St. Vitus Cathedral. Jasper has been used by people since the Stone Age, for decoration and to create tools. The main component is silica with frequent admixtures of quartz and opal, the color is determined by inclusions of chlorite, admixtures of iron, manganese and other elements.
